Congrats to Our CMG Podcast Winners
Podcasting is one potential "ten-yard pass" that CMG teams have been exploring to transform our company, and our Innovation Team decided to jump-start that process with a podcast contest. We asked you to share your concept for the chance to launch the podcast with a $1,000 budget.

Colorblind by Vanessa Echols of WFTV
"This weekly podcast explores a topic every person wants to talk about, but is reluctant to: Race. My built-in audience is Channel 9 viewers & thousands of social media followers. A diverse group of millennials discuss evergreen topics like how their attitude about race is different from their parents, interracial dating and marriage, diversity and affirmative action on campuses and in the workplace; but also timely topics like the Confederate monuments controversy and racial politics in America."
Kid Talk by Jef Meulemans of CMG Research
"A roundtable discussion with 2 to 3 children on grown-up topics. The moderator will open the discussion by presenting a topic and then cultivating the conversation wherever it may lead. Because the topics are by nature unfamiliar to most children, the result should be quite humorous."
Mass Marijuana by Dalton Main of WFXT in Boston
"Legalized Marijuana is making its way into nearly every state in the country and with it is a budding industry. The next craft scene is the cultivation, production and distribution of a popular drug. On this cast, we'll take a look at the legal issues, licensing, culture and businesses surrounding the hottest new industry in America. Using Massachusetts as our guide, we'll examine the legalization and mass promulgation of marijuana."
Raising a Pro by Vanessa Echols of WFTV in Orlando
"Today's superstar athletes don't just happen, getting them there takes a carefully orchestrated plan. Weekly podcast explores the big time investments parents make to create a sports superstar: Private coaches, private clinics, traveling teams, league tournaments, professional videos, all of which costs big money. What do families give up in hope that it's going to pay off with a major contract and endorsements? At what point are parents convinced they have more than just a "regular" athlete?"
People Business by Andy Harrison of CMG HR
"People Business" would address broad concepts related to people and behavior, but specifically focus on work. It would be anchored around both modern and timeless work-related problems: "work/life balance" and how it's changing in present times, the role of social media at work, coping with change at work, getting things done thru the efforts of others, etc. Fun and whimsical, thorough and insightful (similar to Freakonomics & Hidden Brain), this podcast is for people who go to work.

As you have heard Kim Guthrie say, we need your ideas to transform Cox Media Group and create our future! One potential “ten yard pass” that teams across CMG have been exploring this year is podcasting. 33% of millennials listen to a podcast weekly or more. The percentage for Gen X is not too far behind at 24%. We believe that CMG has a right to win in this space because creating and monetizing great audio content has been fundamental to our business since its inception.
WE'LL GIVE YOU A BUDGET TO LAUNCH YOUR PODCAST:
The project will launch pilot seasons of five new podcasts this fall. The podcasts will come from you, our CMG employees. Regardless of what division or department you work in, we are asking you to submit your concept! We will ultimately select five to fund with a $1,000 budget and other resources to launch this fall.
The three judges listed below will determine the five winners:

The five winners will work directly with Jacobs Media Strategies, an award-winning media and digital consulting group who we have partnered with for this initiative. The Jacobs team has been working with us this year as we’ve been learning and exploring podcasting. With their help, we will design, produce and launch five pilot seasons.
The CMG Podcasting Call is truly meant to discover great ideas and uncover raw talent, so if you have never set foot inside a studio before, don’t worry! We will leverage the amazing resources of Cox Media Group to bring these podcasts to life – all we need is the concept.
